On September 9, 2017 David & Kristen Sidorakis’ world was turned upside down when they found out their perfect baby girl had a mass on her brain. Their daughter Mia underwent surgery on September 11th at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to remove the tumor and after three hours the surgeon confirmed that the mass was in fact malignant and aggressive but successfully had removed the entire thing. Days later the biopsy results confirmed the tumor as ATRT- Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor, a very rare and aggressive cancerous tumor of the brain and spinal cord. The disease is most often seen in children age 3 or younger but is found only in fewer than 10% of children with brain tumors.
In the next few months Mia received high doses of chemo therapy and pushed hard through physical therapy while reteaching herself all of her gross and fine motor skills. The first MRI post-surgery in November came back clean and Mia was looking stronger each day. Unfortunately the last two MRI’s have been nothing short of devastating, with the news of both spread and tumor growth on different parts of the brain. Mia has a long and hard battle ahead of her but this warrior has a heart of gold and the strength to pull through.
We are asking you to join us at the Headliner in Neptune on Thursday, June 7th from 7pm to 10pm to help raise money and awareness for ATRT research. All proceeds will go straight to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to help children like Mia with this rare form of childhood brain tumor.
